Aikido is a relatively modern martial art which was developed in the 1930s and 1940s by Morihei Ueshiba, an avid Japanese student of budo.

As basis for Aikido he took several budo arts used by samurai. Although the principle of bare hands forms the biggest part of Aikido practice, we also practice with wooden weapons, predominantly with jo (staff) and bokken (sword).  In Aikido there are no competitions, so the danger of injuries is relatively low.

If you enjoy moving and becoming more aware of your body, Aikido could be something for you, no matter what age or sex you are.
